Hazrat Sayyiduna Hasan al-Basri May Allah be pleased with him was among the greatest scholars, worshippers and saints of the Tabi’een generation. His profound knowledge, unwavering piety and spiritual wisdom left an indelible mark on Islamic scholarship and Tasawwuf. His teachings continue to guide Muslims toward sincerity, righteousness and closeness to Allah. He was born in the blessed city of Medina and spent his childhood among the Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, surrounded by faith, knowledge and piety from an early age. He is counted among the greatest scholars, worshippers and saints of the Tabi’een generation who were known for their profound knowledge, unwavering piety, spiritual wisdom and unwavering commitment to guiding Muslims toward sincerity and closeness to Allah. He is revered as the Imam of the Tabi’een.

Hazrat Abu Sa’id Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan Yasar al-Basri.

Lineage

His father, Yasar, was originally from Iraq and became a freed servant of Sayyiduna Zayd ibn Thabit May Allah be pleased with him. His mother, Khayrah May Allah have mercy on her, was a respected servant of Umm-ul-Mu’mineen Sayyidah Umm Salamah May Allah be pleased with her. He grew up in an environment blessed by the companionship of the noble Sahabah.

Early Life

He spent his childhood among the Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. He benefited from the company and supplications of many Sahabah. He was renowned for intelligence, piety and devotion from a young age.

Islamic Education

He studied and benefited from numerous illustrious Companions including Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib May Allah be pleased with him, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas May Allah be pleased with him, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar May Allah be pleased with him, Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik May Allah be pleased with him and Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud May Allah be pleased with him through his students. He mastered Tafseer, Hadith, Fiqh, Aqeedah, Zuhd meaning Asceticism, Tasawwuf and Islamic Ethics.

Scholarly Excellence

He became one of the greatest Tabi’een. He was recognized as an Imam in Tafseer, Hadith, Fiqh and spirituality. He was revered by scholars across all generations.

Teaching Services

He taught in Basra for many decades. He trained countless scholars, jurists and spiritual masters. His gatherings attracted students from throughout the Muslim world.

Prominent Students

Among his prominent students were Imam Muhammad ibn Sirin May Allah have mercy on him, Imam Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani May Allah have mercy on him, Imam Qatadah ibn Di’amah May Allah have mercy on him and numerous scholars and saints of the Tabi’een generation.

Spiritual Status

He is counted among the earliest and greatest saints of Islam. Many Sufi silsilahs trace part of their spiritual chain through him. He was known for profound wisdom, sincerity and fear of Allah.

Literary Contributions

His sermons, sayings and letters were preserved by later scholars. Numerous collections contain his advice on spirituality, repentance and moral conduct. His works include Maqalat Hasan al-Basri, letters and sermons recorded in classical Islamic works, and wisdom sayings cited in books of Tasawwuf and Hadith.

He was renowned for humility, simplicity and devotion. He frequently wept out of fear and love of Allah. He encouraged repentance, sincerity and preparation for the Hereafter. He was known for eloquent speeches and powerful reminders.
