Overview

Sayyiduna Shaykh Junaid al-Baghdadi May Allah have mercy on him is regarded as one of the foremost Imams of Tasawwuf and spirituality. His teachings established the principles of sober, Shari’ah-centered Sufism and became the foundation of countless spiritual traditions. His life remains a beacon of knowledge, sincerity, piety and unwavering adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnah. He was born in the blessed city of Baghdad, the center of Islamic learning, and received his early education there, surrounded by faith, knowledge and spiritual inclination from an early age. He is universally known as Sayyid-ut-Taifah meaning Leader of the Sufis and is regarded as one of the greatest saints in Islamic history. His teachings influenced nearly all major Sunni Sufi orders.

Lineage

He belonged to a noble and pious family residing in Baghdad. His family was engaged in trade and known for righteousness and devotion.

Early Education

He received his early education in Baghdad, the center of Islamic learning. He memorized the Holy Qur’an and studied Hadith and Fiqh from a young age. He displayed extraordinary intelligence, wisdom and spiritual inclination.

Islamic Education

He studied and mastered Tafseer, Hadith, Fiqh, Aqeedah, Arabic Literature, Tasawwuf and Islamic Ethics.

Prominent Teachers

Among his prominent teachers were Hazrat Shaykh Sari al-Saqati May Allah have mercy on him who was his maternal uncle and spiritual guide, Hazrat Harith al-Muhasibi May Allah have mercy on him and eminent scholars and jurists of Baghdad.

Spiritual Training

He received spiritual training under Hazrat Shaykh Sari al-Saqati. He attained the highest stations of Tasawwuf and Ma’rifah. He became one of the greatest spiritual authorities in Islamic history.

He delivered lessons in Hadith, Fiqh and Tasawwuf. He trained numerous saints, scholars and spiritual masters. His teachings became a foundation for later Sufi orders.

Prominent Disciples

Among his prominent disciples were Shaykh Abu Bakr al-Shibli May Allah have mercy on him, Shaykh Abu Muhammad al-Jurayri May Allah have mercy on him, Shaykh Ruwaym ibn Ahmad May Allah have mercy on him and numerous saints and scholars of Baghdad.

Famous Teachings

He famously taught that all paths are closed except the path of following the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He taught that Tasawwuf is founded upon the Qur’an and Sunnah. He emphasized sincerity, humility, self-purification and love of Allah.

Literary Contributions

His sayings and discourses were preserved by later scholars. Many classical books of Tasawwuf contain his teachings and wisdom. His works include Rasail al-Junaid, Malfoozat-e-Junaid and collections of sayings recorded in Tadhkirat-ul-Auliya and other classical works.
