Lineage

He was the son of Hazrat Abdul Muttalib May Allah be pleased with him. He was the paternal uncle of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. He was also related through fosterage, as both were nursed by Sayyidah Suwaibah May Allah be pleased with her.

Early Life

He was among the most respected and courageous men of Quraysh. He was renowned for bravery, strength and noble character. He was an expert horseman, hunter and warrior.

Acceptance of Islam

He embraced Islam in the early Makkan period. He accepted Islam after learning of the mistreatment of the Holy Prophet ﷺ by Abu Jahl. He publicly declared his faith and became a strong supporter and defender of Islam.

Services to Islam

He stood firmly beside the Holy Prophet ﷺ during the most difficult days in Makkah. His acceptance of Islam strengthened the Muslim community. He defended the believers against persecution and oppression.

Participation in Battles

In the Battle of Badr which took place in 2 AH, he displayed extraordinary bravery and played a major role in the historic victory of the Muslims. In the Battle of Uhud which took place in 3 AH, he fought heroically against the enemies of Islam, eliminated many of the enemy’s strongest warriors and attained the lofty rank of martyrdom while defending Islam.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remembered him with immense love and respect. His sacrifice at Uhud became a symbol of courage, loyalty and devotion.

Martyrdom

He was martyred during the Battle of Uhud in 3 AH corresponding to 625 CE. He was attacked by Wahshi ibn Harb before the latter embraced Islam. He sacrificed his life in defense of the faith and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
