He was born in the blessed city of Mecca into the noble Banu Adi clan of Quraysh and was renowned for courage, wisdom and leadership even before Islam from an early age. He is one of the Asharah Mubashsharah meaning Ten Companions promised Paradise and among the closest companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. He is known throughout Islamic history by the blessed title Al-Farooq meaning The One Who Distinguishes Between Truth and Falsehood.

Hazrat Abu Hafs Umar ibn al-Khattab ibn Nufayl al-Qurashi al-Adawi May Allah be pleased with him.

Lineage

He belonged to the noble Banu Adi clan of Quraysh. His lineage meets that of the Holy Prophet ﷺ at Ka’b ibn Lu’ayy. He was renowned for courage, wisdom and leadership even before Islam.

Acceptance of Islam

He initially opposed Islam but later embraced the faith through the guidance of Allah. He accepted Islam in the sixth year of Prophethood. His acceptance strengthened the Muslim community tremendously. Thereafter, Muslims were able to practice and proclaim Islam more openly.

Title Al-Farooq

The Holy Prophet ﷺ bestowed upon him the title Al-Farooq meaning The One Who Distinguishes Between Truth and Falsehood. He is known throughout Islamic history by this blessed title.

Migration to Madinah

He migrated openly and fearlessly from Makkah to Madinah. He demonstrated extraordinary courage and trust in Allah.

Participation in Battles

He participated alongside the Holy Prophet ﷺ in the Battle of Badr, Battle of Uhud, Battle of Khandaq, Battle of Khaybar, Conquest of Makkah, Battle of Hunayn, Tabuk and all major campaigns of Islam.

Caliphate

He was the second Rightly Guided Caliph of Islam. He assumed leadership after the Wisaal of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq May Allah be pleased with him. He served as Khalifah from 13 AH to 23 AH.

Major Achievements During Caliphate

He expanded the Islamic State into Iraq, Persia, Syria, Palestine and Egypt. He established an organized judicial system. He introduced the Islamic Hijri Calendar. He founded the public treasury known as Bayt-ul-Mal. He established welfare systems for widows, orphans and the needy. He strengthened administration and governance across the Muslim world.

The Holy Prophet ﷺ said: Indeed Allah has placed truth upon the tongue and heart of Umar. The Holy Prophet ﷺ said: If there were to be a prophet after me, it would have been Umar. Numerous virtues of Sayyiduna Umar May Allah be pleased with him are recorded in authentic Hadith collections.

Character and Virtues

He was renowned for justice, humility and simplicity. He lived a modest life despite ruling a vast empire. He personally cared for widows, orphans and the poor. He feared accountability before Allah and governed with fairness.

Shahadah Martyrdom

He was attacked while leading the Fajr prayer in Masjid an-Nabawi. He attained martyrdom after remaining injured for several days.
